The Journey So Far: Connections, Community, and Countdown

Building MahDong has been about more than tiles — it has opened doors to friendships and conversations I never expected, and the store opening is almost here.

The Journey So Far: Connections, Community, and Countdown

When I started down this road with MahDong, I thought I was building a mahjong set. What I did not expect was that I was also building a community — and that the people I would meet along the way would become one of the best parts of the whole thing.

Here is the honest truth: I never would have crossed paths with most of these people if it were not for this project. And that, more than anything else, is what makes this journey feel like something worth talking about.

The Unexpected Gift of Mahjong

Mahjong has a way of pulling people together that is hard to explain until you have experienced it. There is something about sitting around a table, tiles clicking, that strips away the usual small talk and gets people actually talking. Real conversations. The kind you remember.

Building a brand around that game has had the same effect. From the moment I started sharing what I was working on, people showed up — curious, enthusiastic, and full of ideas. Tile designers. Craftsmen. Mahjong players who had been waiting for something like this. Guys who had never touched a mahjong tile in their lives but immediately got what we were going for.

These are not people I would have met at a networking event or a happy hour. They came through the work itself.

Relationships Built Around the Table

One of the things I keep coming back to is how genuine these connections have been. When you are building something you actually care about, it attracts people who care too. There is no pretense in that. You are not exchanging business cards — you are talking about craft, about design, about what it means to make something with intention.

I have had conversations with people across the country — and a few outside of it — who reached out because something about MahDong resonated with them. A retired woodworker who had opinions about rack joinery. A graphic designer who had been thinking about mahjong tile aesthetics for years. A guy who just wanted to tell me that his grandfather used to play and that seeing a set like this made him feel something.

Those conversations do not happen if you are not putting something real into the world.

What the Build Has Actually Looked Like

I will not pretend it has been smooth sailing. There have been late nights, design revisions, logistics headaches, and more than a few moments of wondering if we were getting the details right. Getting the tile colorways dialed in. Sourcing materials that actually hold up. Making sure every element of the set — from the master sheet to the mat to the case — felt cohesive and intentional.

But every one of those challenges led somewhere. A problem to solve usually meant a conversation with someone who knew more than I did. And those conversations turned into relationships.

That is the part nobody tells you about when you start building something. The product is the reason people show up. But the people are the reason you keep going.

The Store Is Almost Here

And now, after all of it — the design work, the prototypes, the refinements, the waiting — the store opening is right around the corner.

I will be honest: it is equal parts exciting and surreal. We have been heads-down for so long that the finish line started to feel abstract. But it is real, and it is close, and the sets are everything we wanted them to be.

The Golf Set. The Bourbon Set. The BBQ Set. The Fishing Set. The Weekend Overland Set. Each one built around a world that guys actually live in — not a theme slapped on a tile, but a whole aesthetic that makes sense from the first tile you pick up to the last one you set down.

If you have been following along, thank you. Genuinely. The support and the interest have meant more than I can say.

What Comes Next

When the store opens, it will not just be a transaction. It will be the start of something — sets going out into the world, games being played, new people getting pulled into a game that has been bringing people together for centuries.

We are not just selling mahjong sets. We are putting something at the table worth gathering around.

Stay tuned. It is almost time.
